SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Yogyakarta (Muchild) applies the Kurikulum Merdeka, the latest educational framework of Indonesia that enables students to learn flexibly and in a centered way. Furthermore, unlike the standardized curriculum, the Merdeka Curriculum gives a greater opportunity to both schools and teachers in coming up with lesson plans, learning resources, and instructional methods in accordance with the needs and the interests of students.
The examination of the Merdeka Curriculum is cast upon emphasizing competency in lieu of cast-in-stone memorization. Subjects will thus emphasize literacy, numeracy, and character development—to ensure students develop not only knowledge on certain things but also critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills in the process. Muchild harmonizes these principles of engagement in the curriculum, which entails project-based learning and application to the real world. This means that students can make sense of what the lessons are all about.
Under this curriculum, learning in English is realized through direct interaction and contextual learning. The students engage in role-playing, discussions, debates, and creative writing-experiences extending their communication skillset rather than mere rote learning of grammatical rules. Besides, the curriculum attempts some multidisciplinary learning, where English is integrated with environmental studies, history, science, or social studies-all of which should motivate students better in learning.
Merdeka Curriculum in Muchild strongly emphasizes Pupils' Pilaf Pancasila, which centers on the values of belief, integrity, diversity awareness, cooperation, and independent learning. The values pervade subjects thus enabling the students to dwell on improving not just their competencies but become a person of great character systems.
The Merdeka Curriculum, which Muchild demonstrates, represents a very inspiring education in my perspective as a Filipino exchange student. It gives more chances for teachers to venture while students are being encouraged to find things out for themselves; I would like to take this on into my classroom practice someday.
